Imo lawmakers urge Gov. Uzodinma to establish school for blind
The Imo House of Assembly has urged Governor Hope Uzodinma to put the necessary measures in place to establish a school for the blind in the state.
The house passed the resolution on Tuesday, following a motion moved by Eddy Obinna.
Presenting the motion, Mr Obinna said that blind people in the state were not given equal educational opportunities even when such was a fundamental human right.
According to the lawmaker, a school for the blind will enable them to become functional citizens, capable of contributing more to the development of the state.
Citing the existence of schools for the blind in other South-Eastern states, Mr Obinna asked the house to request the governor to establish the school.
Supporting the motion, another lawmaker, Amarachi Iwuanyanwu, accused previous administrations in the state of failing to see the need to establish one.
He suggested that some public buildings that were not in use be converted into classrooms to enable the immediate take-off of a school for the blind in Imo.
