The Michael Imoudu National Institute of Labour Studies has matriculated 84 students for its BSc programme in industrial relations and personnel management.

The degree programme is affiliated to the University of Ilorin, Kwara State.

Director-General of MINILS, Issa Aremu, explained during the matriculation of the 2022/2023 academic session on Friday, that the institute saw the need to diversify and introduce diplomas and degree courses.

According to him, historically the institute runs regular courses and special in-plant courses for workers on labour studies on building industrial harmony and fairness in the world of work.

He explained further that the courses expose workers and participants to get more rigorous learning on theories and practices of labour studies.

He described the matriculation as “a maiden historic event for the institute,” reiterating the resolve of MINILS to promote education in line with the SDG Goal-4.

The director-general stated that the goal ensures inclusive, equitable and quality education promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.

He expressed optimism on the partnership with UNILORIN, describing the institution as having a stable academic session.

Mr Aremu said, “The programme will ensure that students get the knowledge required for handling labour issues, mediation and conciliation. Nothing justifies a situation where workers embark on indefinite strike and disrupt education of the youth of the nation.’’

He also added that the initiative is in line with the eight-point agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which lays emphasis on education as important for the development of the nation.

The Vice Chancellor of the UNILORIN, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, admonished the students on character and learning, adding that it was the motto of the university instilled in all students.

Mr Egbewole, represented by the university’s Director of Centre for Affiliated Institutions, Prof. Ahmad Abdulsalam, also urged the students to abide by the rules and regulations of the institute.

He emphasised the need for the students to show commitment and work hard to excel, adding that there was entitlement for those who excel.

According to him, UNILORIN is cult and drug free, enjoining them to imbibe such character.

Mr Egbewole also called on the Federal Government to establish a university dedicated to labour Studies in Nigeria.

Earlier, the Programme Coordinator, Dr Sylvanus Adamade, said the matriculation is the official recognition of students who commenced academic sessions in the institute.

He commended the director-general for committing resources for the commencement of the programme, advising the students to be committed to academic work.
