The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) says enhancing the training of security personnel on Early Warning Response is crucial to mitigating violent conflicts.

Steve Agbo, IPCR’s deputy director (Research, National Conflict Early Warning Early Response System), said this at a National Joint Dialogue on Early Warning Early Response on Thursday in Abuja.

The event was organised by Peace Action for Rapid and Transformative Nigeria Early Response in collaboration with IPCR and Early Warning Early Response Group.

According to Mr Agbo, security personnel must be trained and equipped with the necessary skills to recognise early signs of conflict and respond effectively.

He noted that timely intervention could significantly reduce the escalation of violence and promote stability in affected areas.

Mr Agbo added that dialogue was part of a broader strategy to foster collaboration between security agencies and local communities.

He explained that the strategy aimed to ensure that responses to potential threats were swift and effective.

Oguntayo Olayinka, NSCDC chief superintendent, said a well-trained and skilled security force was necessary to mitigate potential conflicts effectively.

According to him, data collection, analysis techniques, and communication strategies are essential for effective early warning systems.

The project is a 5-year USAID-funded programme implemented by Mercy Corps in Plateau, Kogi, Niger, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, and Zamfara, among others.
