IPCR to unveil situation room to combat conflict escalation in Nigeria

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) says it will on Oct. 29 unveil an Early Warning, Early Response (EWER) situation room to prevent and mitigate the escalation of conflicts.
Joseph Ochogwu, IPCR director-general, announced this on Friday in Abuja during an EWER engagement organised by the Peace Action for Rapid and Transformative Nigeria Early Response (PARTNER).
According to Mr Ochogwu, the situation room will serve as a centralised hub for collecting and analysing data related to potential conflict hotspots throughout the country.
“By utilising advanced technology and data analytics, we aim to identify emerging threats and provide timely responses to prevent escalation.
“The early warning and early response situation room will not only help in identifying potential conflicts before they escalate but also facilitate quick and coordinated responses among relevant stakeholders,” he said.
Mr Ochogwu disclosed that EWER’s situation room staff have already been equipped with the capacity to manage it.
Danjuma Dawop, the chief of party, PARTNER, Mercy Corps, said the establishment of the situation room was crucial for Nigeria.
This, he said, was because the country had faced multiple challenges related to ethnic and communal tensions, insurgency and violence.
“So far, we’ve seen that effective early warning and early response has prevented conflict escalation and mitigated violence extremism across Nigeria,” he said.
He said the situation room aligned with global best practices in peacebuilding and conflict resolution.
Mr Dawop expressed confidence that such a proactive approach would significantly contribute to sustainable peace in Nigeria.
