A magistrate’s court in Jos, on Tuesday, sentenced a 22-year-old mechanic, Isa Mustapha, to 14 months in prison for stealing a car battery.

The magistrate, Irene Pati, summarily tried and sentenced the convict, who pleaded guilty to the charge.

Pati, in her judgment, gave the convict an option of a fine of N80,000 or one year in prison.

She also ordered the convict to pay N70,000 in compensation, or spend two months in prison in default.

Prosecutor Ijuptil Thiawur told the court that the case was reported at the ‘C’ Division Police Station on September 2 by Mashood Bashir, the complainant.

Mr Thiawur said that the convict and his friend, Haruna Ismail, now at large, stole the car battery worth N52,000 from the complainant’s car.

He added that the offence contravened the Plateau Penal Code Law.
