Journalist Savannah Guthrie to return to NBC’s ‘Today’ show

American journalist and NBC’s ‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie is set to return, marking her first appearance on the programme since the suspected kidnapping of her mother, Nancy Guthrie.
The announcement was made on the show after an interview featuring Ms Guthrie and former co-host Hoda Kotb, which was posted on Friday.
“She is coming back to this job she loves here at Today. We are glad to say she will start here Monday, April 6,” Ms Kotb said.
Fellow co-host Craig Melvin also said, “We cannot wait to welcome her with open arms.”
Ms Guthrie stepped away from the show after the suspected kidnapping of her 84-year-old mother from her home in Arizona, where blood and a removed security camera were found at the scene.
During the interview, photos were shared showing her visiting the studio in New York.
Explaining why she chose to return, Ms Guthrie said she was moved by the overwhelming support she had received.
“I just love this beautiful place that we call home, and I know how much people have prayed for me and loved me—all the people you see on TV and the people you don’t, all the notes and messages I’ve received,” she said.
The broadcaster described the show as a meaningful part of her life, calling it “the answer to all my dreams, better than all my dreams.”
However, she admitted returning would not be easy.
“It’s hard imagining doing it because it’s such a place of joy and lightness, and I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not,” she said. “But I can’t not come back because it’s my family. I think it’s part of my purpose right now.”
Ms Guthrie added that she hopes to return when she’s ready.
“I want to smile, and when I do, it will be real; my joy will be my protest, my answer,” she said. “Being there is joyful, and when it’s not, I’ll say so.”
Speaking on the emotional toll the situation has had on her, she said, “I will not fall apart. I’ll never let whoever did this take my children’s mother away from them.”
Ms Kotb, who previously served as a main host of the programme before stepping down in 2025, returned temporarily to support the show during Ms Guthrie’s absence.
