Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has stressed the urgent need for the federal government to intensify fight against killings, abductions and other criminal activities across the country.

Mr Ogunwusi, in a Democracy Day message signed by his spokesperson Moses Olafare, on Friday, said democracy only blossoms in an atmosphere of peace, justice and security.

“Democracy thrives best in an atmosphere of peace, security and justice. As we celebrate another Democracy Day, I urge our governments to do more in the fight against insecurity and banditry. The protection of lives and property must remain a top priority,” the statement stated.

Mr Ogunwusi further appealed to Nigerians to remain patient and supportive of government efforts geared towards addressing the security and economic challenges ravaging the country.

Noting that no responsible government would deliberately desire insecurity within its territory, the traditional ruler maintained that safety of citizens remains fundamental to national growth and stability.

He added, “No government will wish insecurity upon its own country. While challenges remain, Nigerians should continue to support lawful efforts aimed at restoring peace and security across our communities. Together, we can overcome these difficulties and build a safer and more prosperous nation.”

The monarch urged government at all levels to strengthen security architecture, improve intelligence gathering, equip security agencies adequately and ensure that perpetrators of criminal activities are brought to justice.

He also called on citizens to shun divisive tendencies capable of undermining national unity, urging Nigerians irrespective of ethnic, religious or political affiliations to embrace peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

“On this Democracy Day, let us renew our faith in Nigeria, pray for our leaders, support our security agencies and work together for a peaceful, secure and prosperous nation,” the monarch added.

Mr Ogunwusi’s appeal came amid widespread killings and kidnappings, highlighting deteriorating insecurity across the country.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu, in his Democracy Day address, issued a stern warning to marauding bandits, terrorists and their sponsors to desist from their criminal activities or face the full force of the Nigerian government.

“To bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terror: Surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian state. These windows of surrender will not remain open forever. No mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians,” Mr Tinubu stated.
