Staff of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company have embarked on an indefinite strike over a plan by the management to sack over 900 workers, which is a non-implementation of the new national minimum wage.

In a letter dated February 2, 2025, addressed to the NLC chairperson in Kaduna, the aggrieved workers said, “The relationship between them and the management has deteriorated significantly, citing non-implementation of minimum wage among other grievances.”

The workers noted that the KADECO management “terminated the employment of 10 senior staff members without adhering to the company’s conditions of service” despite their interventions and agreements with the company.

They also alleged that management had planned to dismiss over 900 employees.

“While addressing these issues, the management has terminated the employment of 10 senior staff members without adhering to the company’s conditions of service,” the letter explained. Despite our interventions and agreements from previous meetings, these actions have not been fully implemented. To our dismay, we have learnt that the management has initiated the termination of over 900 additional staff members.”

It added, “Given these circumstances, we were left with no choice but to resuscitate the earlier suspended industrial action, commencing Monday 3rd February, 2025 by 12am till further notice.”
