Kaduna to screen 450,000 people for hypertension, diabetes

The Kaduna State Ministry of Health on Thursday said it would begin a health awareness campaign and screening of 450,000 residents for hypertension and diabetes.
The Commissioner for Health, Umma Kalto-Ahmed, said the exercise was aimed at empowering communities with vital knowledge about their health.
According to her, the exercise was part of a national health campaign which targets 10 million Nigerians and will run from October 28 to November 3 at various locations across the state.
She said, “Our mission is to screen 10 million people, provide immediate counselling for sub- optimal results, link newly detected cases for treatment in facilities and also raise awareness of hypertension and diabetes. We also want to improve data collection of non-communicable diseases for policy, support the creation of state wide hypertension and diabetes registers.
According to her, hypertension and diabetes are silent threats that affect millions of people.
She said 27 per cent of annual deaths in the country were caused by non-communicable diseases and those between the ages of 30 and 70 had a 17 per cent chance of dying from hypertension or diabetes.
She added that early detection was important for a longer and healthier life
Ms Kalto-Ahmed said, “We invite the general public to take part in this life-saving initiative, which focuses on screening for hypertension and diabetes. The event will take place at various locations across the state and open to everyone in the state.’’
She urged residents to come out en mass and be screened as early detection could lead to effective management and prevention of serious health complications.
