Kano cigarette sellers vows compliance with consumer protection laws

The Kano State Cigarette Sellers Association has vowed to cooperate with the Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KSCPC) to ensure compliance with laws governing cigarette sales in the state.
The state chairman of the association, Ayuba Goza, made the pledge when he led members on a visit to the council in Kano on Friday.
Mr Goza said the association was committed to complying with all relevant guidelines on the sale and distribution of cigarettes.
He said the guidelines and other required information were clearly displayed on cigarette packs to guide sellers and consumers.
The chairman said members sometimes experience challenges arising from delays in the transportation and delivery of cigarettes by suppliers.
He assured the council that the association would work with its members to ensure strict compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
On his part, the executive secretary of KSCPC, Ibrahim Garba-Muhammad, said the law prohibits the sale of cigarettes to persons below 18 years of age.
Mr Garba-Muhammad stressed the need for cigarette sellers to comply with the law and ensure that cigarettes were not sold to underage persons.
He also called for increased public awareness on the health risks associated with cigarette smoking.
The executive secretary urged sellers to ensure that required information, including expiry dates, “is properly displayed on cigarette packs.”
Mr Garba-Muhammad commended the association’s leadership for responding to the council’s invitation.
He said the council would continue to monitor the sale of cigarettes across the state to ensure compliance with the law to protect consumers.
