The Kano State government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), on Saturday, distributed relief items to 553 households affected by windstorms.

Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf stated this during the distribution of the relief items to persons affected by the disaster in Minjibir and Gabasawa local government areas.

Represented by Amina Abdullahi, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, the governor lauded the federal government for the gesture.

“We conducted many stakeholders’ meetings, awareness and sensitisation to avert flood in the state,” he said.

He urged state residents to desist from dumping waste on waterways and keep a clean environment to avert flooding.

The director-general of the NEMA, Zubaida Umar, said the gesture was part of the federal government’s intervention to assuage the sufferings of the affected persons.

Ms Umar, represented by the NEMA coordinator, Kano Territorial Office, Nuraddeen Abdullahi, said food and non-food items were being distributed to persons affected by the windstorm on May 29, 2024.

“While these items can not fully compensate for the damage and losses you have suffered, they are a small gesture to show that the federal government stands with you in your time of need,” she said.

She listed the food items to include 1,450 bags of 25kg rice, 1,450 bags of 25kg maise, 100 cartons of vegetable oil, 100 cartons of seasoning, and 100 bags of iodised salt.

Others were 1,450 blankets, 1,450 mats and 1,450 nets.

Also, Isitaku Abdullahi, the executive secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), urged the beneficiaries to use the items for their households.
