The Kano State government has called for increased awareness and preventive measures to curb the rising cases of hypertension in the state.

The state commissioner for health, Labaran Yusuf, made the call on Monday in Kano during a news conference to commemorate the 2025 World Hypertension Day (WHD).

Mr Yusuf said the government remained committed to improving public health through enlightenment campaigns, early detection, and access to affordable treatment.

He explained that hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, remains a major contributor to heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure, especially in developing countries.

“The theme for the 2025 celebration is Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer,” said Mr Yusuf. “This underscores the importance of routine checks and lifestyle modifications.”

The commissioner added that the government was taking proactive steps to address the increasing prevalence of hypertension in line with global health strategies.

He revealed that specialised centres had been established across the state to care for people with the condition.

Mr Yusuf noted that World Hypertension Day, introduced by the World Hypertension League (WHL) in 2005, is observed annually on May 17 to raise awareness and promote prevention efforts.

He highlighted that more than 1.28 billion adults worldwide were affected by hypertension.

The commissioner urged residents to embrace healthier lifestyles by reducing salt intake, engaging in regular physical activity, managing stress, and avoiding tobacco and alcohol.

He emphasised that such changes could significantly lower the risk of hypertension and enhance overall health.

Mr Yusuf also commended the GAMMUN Centre for Care and Development Nigeria (GCCDN), saying it partnered with the state government through quarterly immersion programmes to find sustainable solutions to hypertension.

To mark the occasion, the state Ministry of Health organised a health walk and a press briefing to raise awareness about prevention, early detection, and proper management of the condition.
