The Kano State government, on Monday, warned political actors, corporate organisations, event promoters, religious bodies, advertising agencies and others against posting of bills, posters and related materials at roundabouts and others landscaped places in the state.

The commissioner for environment and climate change, Dahir Hashim, said the action undermines ongoing urban beautification and environmental regeneration initiatives in the state.

Mr Hashim stated, “Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has observed with concern the increasing defacement of public infrastructure, particularly roundabouts, medians, road shoulders, flyovers, and other landscaped public spaces across the Kano metropolis through the indiscriminate posting of bills, posters, banners, and related promotional materials.

“This practice not only undermines the aesthetic integrity of the State’s ongoing urban beautification and environmental regeneration initiatives but also contributes to visual pollution, infrastructural deterioration, and obstruction of visibility on key traffic corridors.”

While noting that several roundabouts and green corridors across the state capital are currently undergoing landscaping, decorative enhancement, and ecological improvement in line with global best practices for climate-resilient urban design, the commissioner said unauthorized use of public infrastructure, including flyovers and roundabouts, is hereby prohibited.

“The Ministry, therefore, wishes to formally notify political actors, corporate organizations, event promoters, religious bodies, advertising agencies, and members of the general public that the unauthorized use of public infrastructure including roundabouts and road medians for the placement of posters and related materials is strictly prohibited,” he explained.

Mr Hashim further advised individuals and organisations to desist from this act forthwith, threatening to sanction violators.

“Relevant enforcement units had been directed to intensify surveillance and ensure compliance with established environmental sanitation and urban management regulations. Violators will be sanctioned in accordance with extant laws and may be required to bear the cost of restoration of damaged public assets,” the commissioner stated.

He reiterated the ministry’s commitment to sustaining a clean, orderly, and environmentally responsible Kano, in line with the state’s environmental laws and ongoing efforts to improve urban livability, reduce pollution, and promote civic responsibility.
