The Kano State Ministry of Justice said it disposed of 614 out of 1,627 criminal cases filed between January and December 2025.

The state’s attorney-general and commissioner for justice, Abdulkarim Kabiru-Maude (SAN), disclosed this in a statement by his special assistant on media, Abubakar Tijjani-Ibrahim, on Friday in Kano.

He said the ministry recorded significant progress in strengthening the administration of justice, upholding the rule of law and protecting the fundamental human rights of the people of Kano State.

Mr Kabiru-Maude said, “Out of the 1,627 cases filed, 614 were completed, while 1,013 are still pending before the courts.”

He explained that out of the cases filed, armed robbery and rape accounted for the highest number with 246 and 219 cases, respectively, stating that this demonstrated the government’s resolve to tackle serious crimes.

According to him, upon assumption of office, he embarked on a comprehensive inspection tour of courts and correctional facilities across the state to assess compliance with constitutional and statutory provisions and ensure speedy dispensation of justice.

The attorney-general said the exercise led to the establishment of a committee to investigate human rights violations and the prolonged detention of awaiting-trial inmates in correctional facilities across the state.

He explained that the committee was mandated to identify cases of unlawful or excessive detention, examine systemic challenges within the criminal justice system and make practical recommendations.

Mr Kabiru-Maude added that a task force committee was subsequently constituted to ensure the full implementation of the committee’s recommendations.

He said prosecutorial efficiency was enhanced through the strengthening of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) with the engagement of a former director, Shuaibu Sule, as a consultant.

The commissioner added, ” The ministry handled 101 assignments on drafting and amendment of laws, completing 97, while 216 agreements and Memoranda of Understanding were drafted out of 223 received.

“Capacity building remained a priority, with all state counsel attending the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference in Enugu, while 12 state counsel were sponsored for arbitration training in Nasarawa State.”

The attorney-general said the ministry improved service delivery through the provision of 100 laptop computers to newly recruited state counsel, installation of Starlink internet services and the supply of photocopying machines and printers.

He attributed the achievements to the support of the Kano State government under Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf and reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining reforms that would strengthen justice, fairness and the rule of law in the state.
