The Kano State Government has organised a one-day training on Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), an animal disease, for veterinary workers ahead of a planned statewide vaccination.

The training is part of efforts to improve animal health and enhance livestock production in the state.

He said, “PPR is a disease that mostly affects sheep and goats. It is characterised by high fever, severe pneumonia, and foul-smelling diarrhoea and can be prevented through vaccination.”

The state Commissioner for Livestock Development, Aliyu Isall, noted that the training brought together participants from the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology of the ministry.

Mr Isa-Aliyu urged participants to pay maximum attention to the exercise achieve the desired result.

He emphasised that the ministry was established by Governor Abba Yusuf to transform livestock production from a traditional system into a modern and more productive sector.

The commissioner stressed the importance of accurate data collection and proper record-keeping during the vaccination exercise.

“All participants must ensure proper documentation of the number of animals vaccinated against PPR in their respective areas,” he said.

He noted that the training would be conducted in two sessions, adding that during the first session, participants would be trained on PPR and data management by Mubashir Mustapha.

According to him, the second session will focus on data capturing using the ministry’s recently developed vaccination management software.

He added that the software was designed to facilitate real-time collection and monitoring of vaccination data, noting that it would be facilitated by Malam Aminu, a data management specialist.
