Katsina introduces allowance for teachers posted to rural areas

The Katsina government has disclosed plans to introduce a special allowance package for teachers posted to rural areas.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Zainab Musa-Musawa, disclosed at a one-day summit in Katsina on Tuesday.
The summit was organised in collaboration with Save the Children International and GoalPrime Nigeria, with funding from Education Cannot Wait.
The commissioner noted a plan to compensate the teachers with a percentage of their salary. According to Ms Musa-Musawa, the aim of the allowance is to encourage them to accept postings to rural areas, especially in places with light security challenges.
She explained that it’s worrisome to see that many teachers often prefer to remain in urban areas, leaving rural areas with very few teachers.
She stated that the ministry was doing everything possible to resolve the issue and expressed confidence that the introduction of the allowance would be beneficial.
NAN reports that the summit was organized to mark the International Day to Protect Education from Attack.
