The speaker of the Katsina State House of Assembly, Nasir Yahya-Daura, has disbursed scholarships worth ₦106 million to some indigent students across his Daura constituency.

The disbursement of the scholarship in Daura on Thursday was held under the Nasiriyya Educational Programme Special Scholarship Scheme.

Governor Dikko Radda, who inaugurated the disbursement, praised the speaker, describing the gesture as an exceptional commitment to educational development and human capital growth.

Mr Radda said the initiative demonstrated leadership, compassion, and dedication to uplifting young people.

He stated that it aligned strongly with the state government’s ongoing reforms aimed at expanding educational opportunities.

Mr Radda said, “This initiative by the speaker is not just about paying school fees. It is about giving hope, opening doors, and securing the future of our children.

“What Yahaya-Daura has done is commendable, inspiring, and in line with our vision of ensuring that no child in Katsina is denied education due to financial constraints.”

The governor urged the beneficiaries to justify the investment through academic excellence, discipline, and integrity.

He added, “You must use this opportunity wisely, stay focused, and become worthy ambassadors of your communities and Katsina state.”

Earlier, the speaker explained that the scheme was established to eliminate financial obstacles, support vulnerable families, and ensure that no student from his constituency was left behind educationally.

According to him, 662 students benefited in the first phase of the scheme, with ₦32.7 million disbursed across various tertiary institutions and basic schools.

He revealed that the disbursement was carried out in three phases, with 514 beneficiaries in September 2024 and 105 in November 2024, while 13 additional beneficiaries were approved later.

According to the speaker, that brought the total number to 662 beneficiaries under the scheme’s four-year intervention plan.

He said, “The committee will return to the institutions in 2026 to commence the second cycle of payments for all beneficiaries.”
