Katsina women push for greater representation in education management
The Katsina chapter of the High Level Women Advocates has renewed its advocacy for greater representation of women in the management of the state’s education system.
The renewed advocacy is coming through a one-day sensitisation and engagement programme organised by the HILWA in Katsina on Thursday.
The chairperson of HILWA in Katsina, Mariya Abdullahi, said the aim was to encourage more women to take up leadership roles in education management.
The programme highlighted the need to build women’s capacity, create leadership pathways and address socio-cultural barriers that limit women’s participation in decision-making spaces within the education sector.
She expressed appreciation for the strong turnout and described the gathering as a significant step toward achieving gender parity in the education system.
“Women are the backbone of societal development, yet remain underrepresented in leadership roles. It’s time to bridge the gap, because women bring strength, empathy, innovation and resilience to leadership,” she added.
According to her, HILWA’s efforts had contributed to noticeable improvements, including higher enrolment of girls by the close of the ‘GEP III’ project in 2021.
She further said that their commitment had also contributed to an increase in the number of women occupying leadership positions in the sector.
Ms Abdullahi lamented that stereotypes and structural limitations were still impeding women’s full participation, urging them to remain resilient in breaking barriers.
In her remarks, the commissioner for women affairs, Aisha Aminu, commended HILWA for its consistent efforts to empower women educationally and socially.
The commissioner reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting policies that enhance women’s inclusion in governance.
Also, Sada Muhammad, representing the State Universal Basic Education, praised HILWA’s strategic role in promoting female participation in schooling and educational management.
He assured the participants that SUBEB will continue partnering with the HILWA to strengthen girl-child education and leadership development in line with UBEC/SUBEB policies.
