The Amayanabo of Opobo, King Dandeson Jaja, has urged traditional rulers to champion the cause of inclusivity for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the grassroots.

He made the call on Friday in Abuja, when he paid a courtesy call on the founder, The Albino Foundation (TAF) Africa, Jake Epelle.

Mr Jaja, who is also the chairman of the Rivers State Traditional Rulers Council, said that as custodians of culture and values, traditional rulers bear a unique responsibility to champion inclusivity at the grassroots.

“I urge my colleagues and fellow traditional rulers to embrace this cause and work actively within their communities to promote environments that are accessible, inclusive, and respectful to all.

“We will not only honour the humanity of our people but also reinforce the message that disability inclusion is not just a policy matter but a fundamental human value.

“By setting an example in our communities, let us collectively work to achieve this feat so that every individual is accorded the respect, dignity, and opportunities they deserve,” he said.

Mr Jaja also encouraged communities to recognise the contributions of PWDs, valuing them as equal partners in the progress and prosperity of the nation.

Commending TAF for its role in advancing inclusivity for PWDs, he said that the civil society organisation (CSO) has shown a path forward with programmes and initiatives that uplift PWDs, advocating for their rightful place within society.

He also said that he was expectant of a stronger partnership between traditional rulers and organisations like TAF Africa to inspire meaningful change, promote respect, and ensure a more inclusive society.

Mr Epelle, on his part, said that the visit provides an invaluable opportunity to advocate for stronger support for PWDs at the grassroots level.

He emphasised the role of traditional rulers in advancing disability inclusion.

He added that the visit would deepen partnerships and amplify advocacy efforts aimed at the full integration and empowerment of PWDs in rural and urban communities.

Mr Epelle also urged Mr Jaja to use his position as chairman of the Rivers State Traditional Rulers Council to advocate for more inclusivity in the grassroots, adding that traditional leaders were in a better position to ensure that this is given priority.
