Kwara link bridge collapses, disrupts human, vehicular movements

A bridge in Moro, Kwara State, linking parts of Oyo State, has reportedly collapsed.
The Peoples Gazette gathered that the incident, which occurred on Thursday, disrupted vehicular and pedestrian movement along the route.
It was gathered that the bridge served as a vital link for the transportation of goods and services between Kwara and Oyo states.
In a statement on Thursday, the spokesman for the Kwara Ministry of Works, Olajide Abolarin, also confirmed the incident, noting that the bridge collapsed overnight under the weight of a heavy-duty truck.
He said “The Kwara State Government is working with federal authorities to immediately divert traffic on the old Moro bridge which collapsed overnight under the weight of a heavy-duty truck.”
Mr Abolarin urged motorists to drive with caution, adding that traffic managers would soon be deployed to the area.
He further stated that engineers from the ministry of works would begin palliative work on alternative routes to ease vehicular movement along the corridor.
According to him, federal authorities are also progressing work on a new Moro bridge currently under construction a few metres away.
“State traffic managers are to work with transport unions and commuters to maintain orderly passage on the alternative route while palliative work begins immediately on the old iron-made bridge.
“We call for patience and understanding of road users and others while the emergency is resolved,” he said.
