The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project in Borno has urged livestock farmers to adopt modern practices to improve productivity and strengthen the value chain.

Makinta Ali, state coordinator of L-PRES, made the call at the project’s fourth stakeholders’ engagement meeting on Saturday in Maiduguri.

The meeting, with the theme ‘Strengthening Partnership for Sustainable Livestock Development’, brought together stakeholders from Northern and Central Borno.

The stakeholders discussed measures to sustain the progress recorded in the state’s livestock sector and promote more efficient production systems.

Mr Ali said L-PRES, in partnership with the Borno government, was committed to promoting sustainable livestock production through improved infrastructure and modern technology.

He said the project was also expanding commercial opportunities for livestock owners, traders and pastoralists across the state.

According to him, L-PRES covers several aspects of livestock development, including dairy and meat production, as well as sheep and goat production.

He said the project had adopted a community-focused approach to promote sustainable growth and improve livelihoods within the livestock sector.

Mr Ali said interventions in 2025 prioritised crop and animal production, while the 2026 work plan would focus largely on major infrastructure development.

“Planned projects include grazing-related infrastructure such as water points for herders, modern abattoirs and veterinary clinics.

“We are also developing organised pasture areas with fenced land, planted grasses and a reliable water supply,” Mr Ali said.

The coordinator said L-PRES was promoting value addition by providing equipment for processing animal feed supplements and encouraging the use of crop residues.

He said the project was also emphasising livestock breed improvement through artificial insemination to enhance productivity.

The deputy governor, Umar Kadafur, represented by the commissioner for livestock development, Mohammed Lawan, commended L-PRES for its interventions.

Mr Kadafur reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to sustaining efforts aimed at improving livestock production and strengthening the sector’s contribution to Borno’s economy.
