A bill seeking to strengthen accountability of public officers and address issues on public complaints has been passed into law by the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The bill, which had undergone public hearing in October, was passed by the House after scaling third reading on Tuesday, a statement on the Assembly’s website said.

The legislation had sought the creation of a public complaints and anti-corruption commission, which shall be empowered to investigate administrative actions taken by state officials.

The move, however, comes in the wake of scathing corruption allegations against Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, whose personal bank accounts reflect a consistent pattern of questionable transactions in both local and foreign currency.

Peoples Gazette exposed how Mr. Obasa conducted business deals that netted him $2.4 million in his personal bank accounts within a period of one week early last year.

Financial records of Mr. Obasa’s recently obtained by the Gazette, also revealed how the controversial lawmaker received N51.7 million each into his company De Kingrun Multipurpose Limited account in a string of eleven transactions on October 30, 2018.

Although Mr. Obasa has strongly denied all allegations of corruption, the Speaker has been under investigation of the anti-graft EFCC for several months.
