The Lagos government, through its Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), has charged students to know their rights to prevent sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

DSVA executive secretary Titilola Viviour-Adeniyi gave the charge on Monday at Lagos Island during the induction of 200 students of Lagos State Education District III into the Kings and Queens Club.

“Gender-based violence (GBV) is violence involving men and women, in which the female is usually the victim, and which is derived from unequal power relationships between men and women. ’As a state government, we are committed to creating systems/organisations that prepare both genders to thrive in a world riddled with SGBV,” Ms Viviour-Adeniyi explained.

She noted that any child in Nigeria “is entitled to some rights as a child, and these rights are enshrined in section 3 to Section 14 of the Child Right Law, 2015,” including the right to freedom of discrimination (section 9) and right to dignity of a child (section 10).

Ms Adeniyi-Vivour said that the agency formed the Kings and Queens Club in the state schools to acquaint students with their rights and help tackle SGBV.

She added that the 200 students from Education District III been inducted were ambassadors to tackle SGBV through the Kings and Queens Club in their schools.
