The acting chairman, Agege Local Government, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa and Mr Idowu Akintola, the chairman, Orile Agege Local Council Development Area, have agreed to partner to transform the sports centre abandoned in the community.

Messrs Obasa and Akinola met with the community leaders and youth representatives on Wednesday to deliberate on ways to transform the Ilepako Field Sports Youth Centre, Amoo, Lagos.

Mr Obasa described the initiative as a demonstration of collaborative governance, a strategic investment and youth-focused development aimed at revitalising the youth sports centre.

“The centre will undergo a comprehensive transformation into a modern facility.

“It will be a safe and inclusive environment for the youth to develop their talents,” he said.

He added that the project would create opportunities not only for sporting excellence but for education, employment and social cohesion.

“Partner transcends administrative boundaries, providing youth with platforms to excel locally and gain broader recognition,” he said.

Also speaking, Mr Akinola described the collaboration as a reflection of shared commitment to grassroots development.

He said the facility when completed would meet international standards, enabling local athletes to compete at higher levels.

He also said the project would be executed in phases, beginning with the rehabilitation of the football pitch.

“There will be construction of a modern boxing ring for amateur and professional training.

“There will be a league-standard basketball court, table tennis station for recreational and competitive use and other amenities,” he said.

Olawale Desalu, a community leader, described the initiative as a dream come true.

“The sport youth centre has been a desolate place for a while and has become a hideout for some bad boys,” Desalu said.

He commended the administration of the chairmen and pledged the community’s commitment and cooperation in achieving the project.

Olajide Adebayo, a youth representative, said the project would be a potential game changer for the community.
