Lagos govt restates commitment to end gender-based violence

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has reassured Nigerians of its commitment to revitalise activism against gender-based violence (GBV).
The spokesperson of DSVA, Adejoke Ladenegan-Oginni, disclosed this in a post shared on the agency’s X handle @LSdsva on Monday.
Mrs Ladenegan-Oginni said the #16DaysOfActivism Against GBV served as a global call to action, renewing commitments, demanding accountability, and driving meaningful change.
“It highlights the grim reality faced by countless women whose lives are tragically cut short, often by partners or family members,” she said.
She said the 2024 theme: “Towards Beijing +30: UNITE to End Violence Against Women and Girls”, reflects a unified global commitment to progress and aligns with the campaign’s timeline from November 25 to December 10.
“This initiative urges governments, civil societies, and the private sector to intensify efforts to prevent all forms of violence against women and girls, emphasising its preventability,” the spokesperson said.
Mrs Ladenegan-Oginni said that to commemorate the 2024 campaign, the DSVA, in partnership with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (RoLAC), supported by the European Union and implemented by International IDEA, would engage 16 traditional rulers to amplify the message against GBV.
“The initiative aims to empower community members while providing resources and support for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
“Activities planned include town hall meetings featuring key speakers addressing the various forms of SGBV, alongside two awareness walks in Epe and Elegushi.
“Building on the success of last year’s campaign, which celebrated 16 outstanding women committed to eradicating violence.
“This year’s focus on traditional rulers seeks to leverage their influence to foster a culture of safety and support,” Mrs Ladenegan-Oginni said.
She urged residents of the state to join the campaign by being active bystanders, believing survivors, and acting as mandated reporters.
“When you see something, say something, and do something. Together, let us unite to create a safer and more equitable society,” Mrs Ladenegan-Oginni said.
