A  mob on Thursday in Lagos burnt 25 motorcycles in reaction to alleged killing of a pedestrian by a commercial motorcycle, popularly called Okada.

The burnt motorcycles were  abandoned by their riders who flee the accident scene for fear of  a mob attack.

The  pedestrian, whose identity has yet to be ascertained, was said to have been accidentally hit and killed by a commercial motorcycle on Jakande/Isheri Road.

Aggrieved mob descended on the Okada rider, accusing him of carelessness and nearly lynched him before the police came to his rescue.

Police spokesman in Lagos State, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incidents via his Twitter handle.

Mr Hundeyin said that the motorcycle rider veered off the road and hit the pedestrian, killing her and causing a mob to attack nearby motorcyclists.

“Unfortunately, the pedestrian fell and died on the spot. People around decided to lynch the motorcycle rider but the police arrived at the scene in time and rescued the rider.

“The police immediately took the rider to a hospital for treatment and evacuated the pedestrian.

“Before the police returned to the scene, a mob was already burning  motorcycles left behind by fleeing riders.

“Twenty-five motorcycles were burnt,” he said.

The police spokesman said that the police command in Lagos State condemned jungle justice, warning that anyone apprehended would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

The image maker said that some policemen had been deployed to bring the situation under control.
