Lagos shuts Alade Market for flouting environmental laws

The Lagos government has shut down Alade Market in the Onigbongbo local council area of Ikeja for flouting environmental laws.
Disclosing this on his X platform on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Kunle Adeshina, revealed that the commissioner, Tokunbo Wahab, directed the enforcement of the closure.
The spokesperson stated that the enforcement was carried out on Wednesday by the Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA) officials in collaboration with KAI/LAGESC.
“As directed by HC MOE&WR, Tokunbo Wahab, enforcement operatives from LAWMA and KAI/ LAGESC in a joint operation on Wednesday morning sealed Alade Market situated in Onigbongbo LCDA,” Mr Adeshina said.
“The infractions include (1) Lack of waste bin. (2) Filthy environment. (3) illegal burning of refuse by the roadside. (4) Indiscriminate dumping of refuse. (5) Failure to comply with the rules of Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA),” he added.
In its bid to bring sanity to markets in Lagos, the government had sealed Alaba International, Mile 12, Owode Onirin, Ladipo market, Oke-Odo market, ASPAMDA, etc. Some have been reopened.
