The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) says playtime is not a break from learning but central to children’s thinking, feeling, and performance in school.

LASUBEB Chairman, Hakeem Shittu, spoke on Thursday on the sidelines of an event to mark the International Day of Play, held at St Agnes Nursery and Primary School, Maryland.

The event tagged ‘Protect Play, Protect Childhood’ was supported by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

It featured play-based lessons and creative activities for pupils.

Mr Shittu said Lagos State continues to invest in school buildings, teacher training, and learning materials to raise education standards.

“The Lagos State government has consistently invested in basic education infrastructure, teacher development and learning resources to ensure every child receives quality education across public schools,” he said.

He added that LASUBEB would continue to push child-centred teaching that sparks curiosity, creativity, and participation in safe, inclusive classrooms.

“Protecting play is essential to safeguarding childhood development and must remain a shared responsibility among government, teachers, parents and stakeholders in building a better future.

“At the board level, we will continue promoting engaging and inclusive learning environments while calling for sustained collaboration to ensure every child enjoys a balanced and enriching educational experience across Lagos State,” he said.

During the event, the Lagos field office chief of UNICEF, Celine Lafoucriere, warned that insecurity and crowded classrooms were stopping many children from learning and playing.

She described play as a right and not a reward for finishing schoolwork.

“Any child who is not safe cannot learn. A child who cannot play will not grow into who they are meant to be. These two things are connected, and both need urgent attention.

“When a child plays, their brain grows; when they explore, build things and laugh with their friends, they are learning,” she said

She urged governments, schools, parents, and communities to create safe spaces for children to learn and play.
