Legendary American actor John Amos dies at 84

Legendary American actor John Amos, best known for his iconic role in the hit sitcom “Good Times”, passed away at 84 due to natural causes.
His son, Kelly Christopher Amos, confirmed the news in a statement that his father passed away on August 21 in Los Angeles.
“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,” Kelly wrote. “He was a man with the kindest heart, a heart of gold, and he was loved the world over.”
Kelly continued, “Many fans considered him their TV father. He lived a good life, and his legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film.”
Born on December 27, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey, Amos’ career initially took a different path.
After attending East Orange High School, he pursued a sociology degree at Colorado State University and aimed for a career in football, playing for the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs. However, injuries ended his sports ambitions, leading him to the acting world.
Amos made his television debut in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, where he showcased his comedic talent. He later secured his breakout role as James Evans Sr. in “Good Times” by Eric Monte and Mike Evans and developed by Norman Lear, making him a household name and solidifying his status as a cultural icon.
Amos’ time on “Good Times” ended after three seasons, with his character written off due to creative differences over the portrayal of African Americans on the show.
After leaving, he starred in the groundbreaking miniseries Roots in 1977, earning him an Emmy nomination.
Throughout his career, Amos appeared in popular television series like “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “The West Wing”, and “Men in Trees.”
He was also known for his roles in films like Die Hard 2, Coming to America, and its sequel Coming 2 America. His final acting role was in the 2023 British drama The Last Rifleman.
