Man arrested for beheading teenage daughter

A man was arrested by the India police on Wednesday for beheading his 17-year-old daughter as he walked down to the police station with the chopped head to surrender to the police.
According to Aljazeera, Sarvesh Kumar, beheaded his daughter with a sharp axe on Wednesday evening after he caught her having an affair with a man he never approved for her.
“He said he saw his daughter in a compromising position with a man and he beheaded her in a fit of rage. He has confessed to his crime,” police superintendent in the Hardoi district in northern Uttar Pradesh state, Anurag Vats, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation on Thursday.
There was an outburst of anger on social media by human rights groups after seeing a video clip of Mr. Kumar carrying his teenage daughter’s head as against the Indian law on ‘honour killings’
Human rights groups say thousands of women and girls are killed across South Asia and the Middle East each year by family members angered at perceived damage to their “honour”.
“Daughters in India are seen as a sign of family honour, which results in such crimes,” Madhu Garg, the vice president of All India Democratic Women Association, Uttar Pradesh chapter told Aljazeera.
“The issue of the right to choice needs immediate attention and a separate law should be made for dealing with honour killing,” she added.
In India the honour law is under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 300. It is a law that stands against gender-based violence. According to United Nations, 5,000 females are killed yearly in honour killings, which is mostly common in Middle East and South Asia
In 2018, the Indian government directed all states to set up a special unit to protect couples against harassment but not much has been achieved for the past three years.
