The police have arraigned one Michael Ucheonye, 43, for allegedly obtaining N3.08 million from a complainant by fraud.

Mr Ucheonye is standing trial on conspiracy, fraud and stealing before Magistrate D.S Odukoya in Ojo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Insp. Esther Adesulu, said that the defendant committed the offence with others, now at large, in October 2022.

He alleged that the defendant fraudulently obtained N3.08 million from a complainant, one Blessing Onwudiwe, pretending that he would supply her some scrap irons.

“The representation was false as the defendant disappeared with the money and never supplied the items to the complainant,” Ms Adesulu said.

Ms Adesulu said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 287, 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Ms Odukoya granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She also adjourned the case until Aug. 8 for trial.
