Man kills father with pestle during argument in Plateau

Plateau police have arrested one Joseph Yakubu for allegedly hitting his father, Yakubu Dalyop, on the head with a pestle during an argument.

Operatives of the Plateau State Police Command have arrested one Joseph Yakubu for allegedly hitting his father, Yakubu Dalyop, on the head with a pestle during an argument.

The state commissioner of police, Hassan Yabanet, disclosed on Tuesday at the command’s headquarters in Jos that the 49-year-old victim was unconscious and died four days later while receiving treatment at the hospital.

He said the 29-year-old suspect committed the act in the Anglo-Jos community, Jos South Local Government Area of the state at about 8:00 p.m. on February 15.

According to Mr Yabanet, the incident was reported to the Anglo-Jos police division on February 20.

Mr Yabanet said, “On 20/02/2024 at about 6:00 p.m., information was received at the Anglo-Jos division by a good Samaritan that on 15/02/2024 at about 8:00 p.m., one Joseph Yakubu, male, 29yrs of Kambel Anglo-Jos had a minor misunderstanding with his father, one Yakubu Dalyop aged 49yrs.

“As a result, the son took a pounding pestle and hit the father on the head. The father became unconscious and was rushed to the Plateau State Specialist Hospital for medical attention.

“Unfortunately, he died on 19/02/2024 at about 1:00 p.m. while receiving treatment. The suspect has been arrested while the corpse was deposited at the same hospital mortuary.”

The commissioner said the suspect would be charged to court after the conclusion of the investigation while assuring residents of adequate protection of their lives and property.
