Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has jokingly asked his Norwegian counterpart, Jonas Gahr Støre, to make sure star forward Erling Haaland is available to represent Canada in the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Haaland has been on fire for Norway in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, scoring seven goals so far, including a brace in their round of 16 match against Brazil to power the European country to the quarter-finals of the tournament for the first time ever. 

During a recent meeting between the two leaders, Mr Carney joked that it would be appreciated should Norway loan the Manchester City forward to Canada for the next World Cup. 

“Interoperability also means sharing crews.

And in the next World Cup, if you could share Erling Haaland with us, that would be greatly, greatly appreciated,” Mr Carney. 

In response to the request, Mr Støre replied that “he (Haaland) is up for sale” as both leaders laughed alongside German chancellor Friedrich Merz, who was also present at the meeting. 

Meanwhile, the campaign of co-hosts Canada in the World Cup ended in the round of 16 following a 3-0 loss to Morocco. It was, however, the country’s best-ever World Cup finish.
