Match Report: Chelsea play out a goalless draw against Spurs

It was a battle of tactics at Stamford Bridge as two of the Premier League’s in form teams, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspurs shared the spoils in the Super Sunday clash.
Frank Lampard made three changes to the starting line-up from the Champions League game against Rennes. Callum Hudson-Odoi, Antonio Rudiger and team captain Ceasar Azpilicueta made way for Hakim Ziyech, Thiago Silva and teenage sensation Reece James.
Spurs manager, Jose Mourinho, however, handed a first league start to promising centre back, Joe Rondon.
The home side showed intent early in the match with winger Ziyech testing Spurs goalie Hugo Lloris from range. Chelsea forward Timo Werner then had his well worked strike cancelled for off-side minutes later.
Spurs responded by pushing back Chelsea attack and creating a chance of their own. Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy was called to action, parrying away Serge Aurier’s shot apparently destined for the bottom corner at the 15th minute mark.
Much of the rest of the first half was cagy as Spurs continued to resist pressures from Chelsea.
The restart was much like the first half, Chelsea probing while the North Londoners held their lines tight.
Chelsea were causing Tottenham problems with right back James and winger Ziyech whipping in crosses which Abraham and Werner failed to convert.
Mourinho made the first change in the 65th minute, bringing on Lo Celso for Tanguy Ndombele to refresh the tiring midfield.
Lampard then reacted in the 73rd minute bringing on Christian Pulisic for Werner. Olivier Giroud was also subbed on for Tammy Abraham minutes later to break the deadlock.
Keepers at both ends then took turns to produce gasping saves. Lloris went full stretch to tip Mason Mount’s stinger from the edge of the box away for a corner kick while Mendy made a diving save a moment later to keep scores even.
Playmaker Kai Havertz was introduced to replace Ziyech in the 83rd minute as Chelsea sought for a breakthrough while Mourinho brought on Ben Davies for Bergwin as he seeks to ‘close shop.’
The match which ended goalless sees Tottenham Hotspur keeping their first position on the League table while Chelsea sit on third spot behind Liverpool.
The match is the 1000th game since Billionaire owner, Roman Abramovich, bought the West London side.
