Migrants killed as channel crossings top 30,000

Three migrants, including two children, have died while attempting to cross the English Channel, with three others believed missing, French authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
The incident occurred off the coast of Pas-de-Calais, while in a separate case, a woman died during another attempted crossing, according to Kent Police.
The tragedies follow a spike in crossings after a 10-day lull due to weather-related conditions.
On September 6, UK Home Office figures showed that 1,096 migrants arrived in a single day, pushing the total number of Channel crossings in 2025 past 30,000 —the earliest this milestone has been reached since records began in 2018.
The surge coincided with the first meeting of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s new Cabinet, including Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who faces mounting pressure to tackle the escalating migrant crisis.
