A magistrates’ court in Jos on Thursday sentenced a 23-year-old miner, Umar Ilya, to one year imprisonment for stealing a cell phone and money from the owner’s bank.

The magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos, summarily tried and sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

Mr Bokkos, who sentenced him to six months, gave him an option of a N20,000 fine and to pay a compensation of N23,000 to the complainant, in default, to spend another six months in prison.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on August 13 at the “C” Division police station by Halidu Musa, the complainant.

Mr Gokwat said the convict trespassed into the complainant’s house, stole his phone valued at N20,000, and used it to process a loan of N2,000 from his account.

He said the offence contravened the Plateau State Penal Code Law.
