Miner sentenced to one year in prison for stealing phone

A magistrates’ court in Jos on Wednesday sentenced an 18-year-old miner, Mubarak Shaibu, to one-year imprisonment for stealing a cellphone.
The magistrate, Irene Pati, sentenced the convict, who pleaded guilty to the charge.
Ms Pati, however, gave the convict an option of a N50,000 fine and ordered him to pay N10,000 as compensation to the complainant.
The prosecutor, Ijuptil Thiawur, told the court that the complainant, Aliyu Abubakar, reported the case on January 9 at the ‘C’ Division Police Station.
Mr Thiawur said the convict begged to use the complainant’s phone to make a call and absconded with the itel phone.
He said the offence contravened the Plateau Penal Code Law.
