Mozambique has vowed to use technology to improve citizens’ living conditions by simplifying service delivery and strengthening the management of natural disasters that cyclically affect the country.

The President, Daniel Chapo, said this at the inaugural National Conference on Digital Transformation in Maputo, the capital.

He said that digital transformation must be used to make life easier for Mozambicans, while public services should work toward digitalisation.

Mr Chapo stated, “Many citizens are forced to stand in long queues under intense heat or heavy rains or walk long distances in search of basic public services. While such challenges persist, we are failing in our fundamental mission to serve the Mozambican people.

“The government wants digital transformation to facilitate service delivery in all parts of the country and for citizens living abroad, through secure operating systems, fostering a nation where everyone has internet access to accelerate national development.

“Mozambique also aims to use digital transformation to mitigate the impact of climate shocks such as floods by improving early warning systems and protecting lives. If floods remind us of our vulnerabilities, they also challenge us to accelerate solutions that can save lives.”

Mr Chapo described technology as one of those solutions.

“Early warning systems, emergency coordination platforms, and territorial planning can make the difference between tragedy and the protection of our communities,” he said.

The president noted that digital transformation was crucial for building the country’s knowledge hub and ensuring that Mozambique did not lose the memory of each event affecting sectors such as climate, health, education, housing, and public administration.
