The Nigerian Navy has called for a modern logistics system to support expanding operations, fleet renewal and emerging security demands.

The chief of naval staf, Idi Abbas, made the call on Wednesday at the Nigerian Navy Logistics Seminar 2026, held at the NN Logistics College, Dawakin Tofa, Kano.

Mr Abbas said the increasing complexity of naval operations was placing greater pressure on systems that sustain platforms, personnel and facilities. He said logistics must therefore provide the right resources in the right condition, place and time to achieve the desired effect.

”The seminar should produce practical and measurable recommendations for improving resource planning, procurement, inventory management, accountability and service delivery,” he said.

Mr Abbas called for greater use of technology, integrated logistics information systems and effective lifecycle management. He noted that the changing security environment was increasingly drawing the navy into joint and land-based operations beyond its traditional maritime responsibilities.

He said the development of the Nigerian Navy Marines and Special Operations Command had further expanded the service’s operational responsibilities.

”The development requires logistics planning to provide for land mobility, field sustainment, combat supplies, temporary accommodation, medical support and forward maintenance,” he said.

The CNS said that the navy needed a long-term logistics roadmap to anticipate requirements from fleet renewal, indigenous shipbuilding and expanding responsibilities.

According to him, fleet renewal must be matched by logistics renewal, with attention to infrastructure, spares, petroleum, oils and lubricants, technical manpower and maintenance.

He also identified inventory management and technology as critical components of an effective logistics system.

He urged participants to ensure that the seminar’s recommendations translated into practical, implementable measures to improve logistics performance and operational effectiveness.

Earlier, the chief of logistics at Naval Headquarters, Sulaiman Abdullahi, said the seminar brought together military professionals, industry practitioners and technical experts.

Mr Abdullahi said the gathering allowed stakeholders to exchange ideas on improving the navy’s logistics system.

He called for stronger interaction between logistics practitioners and operational commanders, as well as greater cooperation across procurement, engineering, finance, infrastructure and supply functions.

The event attracted representatives of sister services, security and intelligence agencies, professional institutions, academia, and various industries.
