NAWOJ trains journalists in home gardening in Bauchi

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Bauchi State chapter, on Thursday organised a one-day training session for women journalists in Bauchi in home gardening.
The aim is to improve household diets and enhance food security.
The training was in partnership with a non-governmental organisation, the Rural Urban Women Green Initiative.
Speaking at the event, the state Chairperson of NAWOJ, Rashida Yusuf, said it was designed to equip participants with modern gardening techniques.
She said that seedlings and other starter packs would be distributed to the 40 participants.
Ms Yusuf commended the women for their commitment to agricultural development in the state.
She recommended home gardening as a potential entry point into commercial agriculture.
The NAWOJ chairperson expressed appreciation to RUGWI for initiating “such a valuable agricultural initiative” for women in Bauchi.
In her remarks, the Chairperson of RUGWI, Prof. Khadija Bello, said the organisation desired to raise awareness about agricultural practices while promoting nutrition and empowerment.
She said, “We are committed to creating awareness and implementing practical agricultural practices—starting from peasants to commercial farmers. We hope to continue to partner with women journalists to further educate and empower women on best practices to ensure better yields.’’
The highlight of the training was a practical session on soil quality—focusing on the various components and ingredients necessary for effective home gardening.
The association distributed sacks, seedlings, and other gardening materials to the participants.
