NBC orders media houses to be soft on killer herdsmen coverage

The National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has warned media houses in the country to cautiously report the issue of insecurity particularly around the Herdsmen crisis in Ondo and Oyo state.

The regulatory body, in a statement dated January 26,  said this directive to “remind broadcasters of the rules governing the coverage of crisis.”

The statement invoked certain provisions of the NBC’s code, asking that media houses and broadcasters present the news up to professional standards, as well as refrain from spreading information that it deems “divisive.”

The NBC released similar directives, last year, about the coverage and reportage of the #EndSARS protests, urging them to soften the gravity of the information being shared, to prevent the aggravation of the situation.

The group, which was established by former military dictator Ibrahim Babangida to further fascist policies, also asked that media houses refrain from embarrassing individuals, organisations and the government.

Media houses such as Channels Television, AIT and Arise TV were fined N3 million each over violating the NBC code and for their “unprofessional coverage” of the EndSARS protests and the crisis that followed it.
