The Agenda for Development in Africa (ADA) says the North East Development Commission’s (NEDC) infrastructure development strides and community engagement minimised the effect of the nationwide protests in the region.

Samson Audu, executive director, ADA, a civil society organisation, said in a statement in Abuja on Saturday.

Mr Audu said the Muhammad Alkali-led agency had set high standards and created a model for other development commissions to follow.

He said the commission had given the people of the areas a sense of belonging by completing several of projects across the region’s six states, in education, healthcare, and economic, including youth empowerment.

He said that the innovative North East stabilisation and development master plan helped to promote peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region.

According to Mr Audu, the commission’s commitment to community engagement, inclusive development, and strategic planning has created a model for other regions to follow.

He said that the ongoing nationwide protests, which degenerated into chaos in some parts of the country, highlighted the importance of leadership, as shown by Mr Alkali and his team in the commission.

He recalled that there had been reports of widespread looting, arson, and clashes between protesters and security forces.

“This has also disrupted economic activities, causing untold hardship to citizens and further exacerbating the country’s socio-economic challenges,” he said.

Mr Audu said the situation underscored the need for effective leadership and development initiatives that could address the root causes of discontent and promote inclusive growth.

“We particularly commend the NEDC for its exceptional efforts in preventing the protests by diligently executing its assignments.

“The commission’s swift response to the region’s needs, its engagement with community leaders and stakeholders, and its commitment to inclusive development have all contributed to the relative peace in the region,” Mr Audu said.

This, according to him, involves prioritising the welfare of the people and addressing their grievances.

He said NEDC had demonstrated that development could be a powerful tool for conflict prevention and resolution.

The group urged other development agencies in the country to emulate the NEDC by prioritising the welfare of the people and promoting sustainable development.

“By doing so, we can reduce tensions, promote peace, and create an environment conducive to progress and prosperity,” Mr Audu said.
