The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Wednesday sensitised stakeholders and partners in disaster management to preparedness and camp management.

The one-day workshop held on Tuesday had officials of the Plateau Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), humanitarian and security agencies, community leaders, among others, in attendance.

Speaking, head of NEMA’s Jos Operations Office, Bintu Wanna, said that the exercise aimed to develop measures for strengthening inter-agency collaboration and mitigating the impact of flooding in the state.

Ms Wanna described flooding as one of the most frequent and destructive natural hazards affecting communities in the country.

“This is not simply about reacting during flooding, but it involves careful planning, risk assessment, community awareness, early warning systems and coordinated response mechanisms.

“Preparedness can reduced loss of life, minimise suffering and improve the relisience of the vulnerable communities.” she added.

Ms Wanna decried that climate change had increased the frequency and intensity of flooding, hence the need for stakeholders to adequately prepare and adopt standard camp management practices.

She urged participants to transfer knowledge gained from the training to other residents and ensure that vulnerable populations receive timely information on flood risks.

Also speaking, the principal relief and rehabilitation officer of NEMA, Agbatse Bright, said that camp management was critical towards protecting the dignity and safety of internally displaced persons (IDPs).
