A new batch of U.S. classified documents on Ukraine, China and the Middle East surfaced on social media sites on Friday, causing fear among the intelligence communities.

According to the New York Times, there were more than 100 documents on the Web.

The apparent leak looked like a Russian disinformation operation to sow doubt about Ukraine’s planned counteroffensive, a Ukrainian presidential official said on Friday.

Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine told Reuters news agency that the data contained a “very large amount of fictitious information” and Russia was trying to regain the initiative in its invasion.

He also posted on his Telegram channel on Friday that the data published on social networks is not true and has nothing to do with Kyiv’s real plans.

The Pentagon said that it is accessing the apparent security breach.

“We are aware of the reports of social media posts, and the department is reviewing the matter,” Deputy Press Secretary, Sabrina Singh, said.

Numerous documents revealing information about schedules for the supply of weapons, the number of troops, and battalions have been published on social networks such as Twitter and Telegram.

As the newspaper notes, one of the documents is a map with the balance of power around Artemovsk (the Ukrainian name is Bakhmut). Other classified materials, the newspaper points out, relate to China and the Indo-Pacific region, the Middle East, and the fight against terrorism.

Kyiv said President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and top security officials discussed ways to prevent leaks of military information at a meeting on Friday.

A statement about the meeting by the President’s office did not confirm any leak has occurred and said nothing about the New York Times report.

The war in Ukraine has killed thousands of people, wrecked cities, and destabilised the global economy.
