New Ghanaian president reduces ministers from 30 to 23 amid push to cut federal spending
In a bid to cut the cost of governance, Ghana’s President John Mahama has announced a reshuffle within his government, reducing the number of ministries.
This move was announced in a circular dated January 9, two days after Mr Mahama took office on January 7, 2025.
Mr Mahama cut down the number of ministries from 30 to 23, scrapping or merging seven ministries.
The affected ministries include: ministry of information, ministry of youth and sports, ministry of water and sanitation, ministry of chieftaincy, ministry of works and housing, ministry of national security, and ministry of railways.
This cost-reduction move comes amid austerity measures Ghana is taking under Mr Mahama’s watch following years of economic challenges marked by high inflation and a weakening currency, which prompted the government to seek financial support from international lenders.
Mr Mahama, who previously served as president from 2012 to 2017, returned to office after securing victory in the 2024 elections.
