A non-governmental organisation, Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), in collaboration with Ndukwe Kalu Foundation, has trained 400 students across six selected secondary schools in Bauchi metropolis in digital rights.

The CITAD’s Programme Lead in Bauchi, Mujahid Ibrahim, said this at the four-week training programme held in Bauchi on Thursday.

He said that the training was a step toward promoting digital literacy and safe internet practices among young learners.

He highlighted the importance of equipping students with digital skills, especially in today’s increasingly connected world.

Mr Ibrahim said, “The programme is not just about teaching students how to use the internet. It’s about helping them understand their rights, responsibilities, and safety as digital citizens. We’re particularly proud of our inclusive approach, ensuring students with disabilities are not left behind.’’

According to him, the initiative is designed to build students’ capacity in digital rights, cybersecurity awareness, data privacy, and responsible online behaviour.

He stated, “Through interactive discussions and practical sessions, students are being taught how to recognise online threats such as cyberbullying, hacking, theft and how to protect themselves.’’

Mr Ibrahim added that the programme was supported by the Bauchi State Commissioner for Education.

He added that the programme received commendation as a timely intervention to prepare students for the realities of the 21st-century digital environment.

The participating schools are Government Army Barracks (Senior and Junior Schools), Government Day Secondary School, Ƙofar Idi, and Success International School, Wuntin Dada.

Others are City Comprehensive Day Secondary School, Government Secondary School, Bakari Dukku, and Sa’adu Zungur Government Day Secondary School.

Responding, a student of Sa’adu Zungur, Government Day Secondary School, Rasheeda Ahmed, said she now understands digital privacy and ethics.

Usman Shehu of Government Day Secondary School, Ƙofar Idi expressed gratitude to the organiser of the programme.

“I’ve learnt so much especially on how to protect my personal data online,” he said.
