Nigeria among three lowest-performing countries in global AI adoption: Report

Nigeria has been ranked 62nd out of a total of 64 countries in the AI Adoption Index for the year 2025.
A new study from cyber security platform, Cybernews, ranked Nigeria among the three lowest-performing countries adopting the use of AI tools.
The study scored Nigeria 7 percentage performance rate; same rate with Poland and Venezuela.
Explaining its methodology, the research group said it examined the level of AI tools usage across 64 countries, using globally recognised population statistics and the volume for the 100 most downloaded AI applications (apps) on Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
The study noted that despite a year-over-year growth, Nigeria barely rose from 1 per cent to 7 per cent Artificial Intelligence adoption.
“Despite posting the fastest year-over-year growth in the dataset (+600%), this increase reflects a rise from just 1% in 2024 to 7% in 2025, leaving overall penetration comparatively low,” the study said.
Explaining the reason for Nigeria’s poor performance, the findings cited inequitable access to electricity, internet availability, device affordability and digital infrastructure as structural constraints.
“In Nigeria, only around 60% of the population has access to electricity, directly restricting consistent use of AI tools,” the researchers stated.
“While demand is accelerating, infrastructure and access gaps continue to suppress per-capita adoption in the country,” the study noted.
It added, “Once countries reach a certain level of development where connectivity is broadly available, GDP per capita becomes a weak predictor of AI use.”
Comparing with other countries of the world, the study said adoption value in Singapore increased from 24 per cent in 2023 to 52 per cent in 2024 and ultimately to 66 per cent in 2025.
In Chile, AI tools downloads and adoption increased by population size from 3.7 million in 2023 to 6.3 million in 2024 and ultimately to 11.8 million in 2025.
In India, the rate of artificial intelligence downloads rose from 3.2 million population size in 2024 to 15.8 million population rate in 2025, rated the largest yearly growth in the dataset.
