The Forum of First-Term Governors under the Progressives Governors’ Forum has condemned attacks on Nigerians and other nationals in South Africa.

The forum, which comprised 20 governors of the All Progressives Congress, made its position known shortly after a closed-door meeting held in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday.

The meeting, hosted by Governor Nasir Idris at the Government House, Birnin Kebbi, was attended by 16 governors from across Nigeria.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Mr Idris said the forum expressed deep concern over the ugly incident in South Africa.

He said, “We express concern over reported attacks, killings, and hostility directed at Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa. While we respect the sovereignty of the Republic of South Africa and the brotherly relations between our two countries, we condemn all forms of xenophobia, mob violence, unlawful killings, and abuse of foreign nationals anywhere in the world.

“We urge the appropriate authorities to investigate such incidents transparently, protect law-abiding Nigerians and other African residents, and ensure justice in accordance with the law and diplomatic norms.”

Mr Idris noted that Nigeria and South Africa were important nations on the continent and that their relationship should be anchored on mutual respect.

“Nigeria and South Africa are leading African nations. Our relationship must continue to be guided by mutual respect, protection of citizens, justice, accountability, and a shared destiny,” he said.

The governor added that the forum urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain law-abiding “until normalcy is restored”.
