Nigerians will remember Buhari for placing country above personal gains: Defence Ministry

The Ministry of Defence has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
It described him as a towering figure in Nigeria’s history, whose legacy of service, integrity, and patriotism will endure for generations.
“He will be remembered as a leader who placed the country above personal interest,” the ministry said.
The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, conveyed this in a letter of condolence addressed to President Bola Tinubu, the Buhari family, and the entire nation on Monday in Abuja.
According to Mr Matawalle, the former president, who died on Sunday at a clinic in London, served Nigeria with distinction in both military and civilian capacities.
“From his time as military head of state (1983–1985) to his two-term democratic presidency (2015–2023), Buhari remained a symbol of discipline, unity, and national commitment.
“His steadfast belief in a united and indivisible Nigeria inspired generations,” the letter read.
The minister also prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul, asking Allah to grant him Aljanatul Firdaus.
The passing of Mr Buhari has drawn tributes from across the nation and around the world, underscoring his enduring impact on Nigeria’s political, security, and governance landscape.
