Inspector General of Police Usman Baba has approved a three-day retreat for senior police officers ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi disclosed this in a statement. He said the retreat was part of efforts by the force to ensure stability in internal security and a safe environment conducive for the conduct of the general elections in 2023.

The retreat with the theme ‘The Imperative of a Nigeria Police Strategic Plan For Peaceful Elections’, will be held between October 18 and 21 in Imo.

According to the statement, participants at the retreat will be senior officers of the rank of deputy inspectors general of police (DIG), assistant inspectors general of police (AIG), police commissioners and other heads of police formations.

It added that other participants would be carefully selected security and election management experts across the world to engage in peer review and cross fertilisation of ideas.

The police stated that the retreat would ensure effective management of security before, during, and after the elections and provide opportunity for senior officers to interact with key officials from sister security agencies, INEC and international development partners.

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to declare the retreat open and deliver a keynote address. Governors, service chiefs, heads of other security agencies and past inspectors general of police are other guests to attend the event.
